Before you read about reflection, try a little of it.
Most of us learn about things by reading explanations. But some things make sense only when we experience them. So instead of telling you what a moment of reflection is, let us simply try one together. It takes less than a minute.
Find a comfortable place. You can sit, lean back, or put your phone down for a moment. 🪑
Do not fix anything or judge anything. Just look. Is it busy? Quiet? Planning something? Worrying? Whatever you find is fine.
Press start, close your eyes if you like, and simply notice.
It can be small: a delay, a comment, a noise, a message. Bring it to mind for a moment. Now ask, what happened within me? Perhaps a tightness, a quick thought, a sudden heat, a wish to say something back.
We are quick to give reasons: "Because he always does that," "Because I was tired." Try this once without the reason. Just see the reaction as it was, like watching a cloud pass. Explanations can wait.
No scrolling, no planning, no improving yourself. Just sitting. For many of us, this is surprisingly hard to remember. Notice what you feel as you think about it. Is it peace, restlessness, guilt, or something else?
Not what you should be feeling, and not what you wish you were feeling. Just what is here, in this very moment. One honest sentence is enough. 💛
In less than a minute, you did something many of us rarely do. You stepped out of the rush for a moment and looked at your own experience, gently and without trying to fix it.
You may have noticed something surprising. Or perhaps you noticed very little, and that is perfectly fine too. Reflection is a skill that grows with repetition, and it grows best in company.
