What may be quietly sitting beneath the reactions we keep repeating?
Some of our reactions seem to come back again and again. We want a "yes" from people. We find it hard to say "no." We ask, "Are you sure it is okay?" for the third time. And when we feel upset, we are not always certain what we are upset about.
These are not flaws to be fixed in a hurry. They are clues. Each one may be pointing to something we need, even if we have never named it. Let us explore five questions, with curiosity and no judgment. 🌿
From childhood, a smile or a "well done" told us we were safe and loved. Over time, that can become a habit of checking other people's faces before trusting our own judgment. Wanting approval is deeply human. It becomes heavy only when our sense of being "okay" depends on it entirely.
Behind a hard "no" there is often a quiet fear: "They will be upset," "They will think I am selfish," "I might lose the relationship." So we say yes, and then feel tired or resentful later. Saying yes can be a way of keeping the peace, but sometimes the peace we are keeping is everyone else's.
"Are you angry with me?" "Did I say something wrong?" "Are we okay?" Reassurance feels like relief, but the relief is often short. The doubt returns, and so does the question. It may be worth asking what the doubt is really about, and what kind of certainty we are hoping someone else can give us.
Appreciation tells us that our effort was seen and that we matter. There is nothing wrong with enjoying it. But if a day feels empty without praise, or an unnoticed effort feels like failure, it may be worth getting curious about where our sense of worth is being kept, and who is holding it.
Behind anger, sulking or withdrawal, there is often a need that went unmet: to be heard, respected, comforted, included or understood. We get upset about the dishes, the tone or the delay, but the real question may be, "Do I matter here?" Naming the need is often the first step to meeting it.
Our needs rarely arrive with a label. They often show up dressed as behaviour. Here are some possibilities to consider. These are not rules, only gentle starting points for your own reflection.
| What I notice | A need that may be underneath |
|---|---|
| I find it hard to say no | Belonging, safety, being liked |
| I keep asking if things are okay | Security, certainty, closeness |
| I feel deflated without praise | Recognition, feeling valued |
| I get irritated over small things | Rest, respect, being heard |
| I go silent when hurt | Care, without having to ask for it |
The next time a familiar reaction appears, try these small steps:
Over time, you may find that many needs can be met in more than one way, and not always through the same people or the same patterns. 💛
