Relationships and Human Behaviour 🤝

Understanding yourself is the quiet beginning of understanding others.

Our closest relationships are where we feel the most joy, and also where we get hurt the most. A tone of voice, a delayed reply, a forgotten promise: small things that somehow carry a lot of weight.

It is easy to think the problem is always "out there," in the other person. But every relationship has two sides, and one of them is you. Here are five questions that gently turn the lens inward. 💭

🔥 Why do small disagreements become big arguments?

It rarely starts with the topic itself. A small remark touches an older feeling, such as "I am not valued" or "I am not heard," and suddenly the argument is about much more than dishes, plans or timing. We are not just reacting to today. We are reacting to everything it reminds us of.

👂 Am I listening to understand, or waiting to respond?

Notice what your mind does while someone else is speaking. Is it taking in their words, or preparing a reply, a defence or a correction? Listening to understand makes the other person feel safe. Waiting to respond makes them feel like they are in a match.

🔮 Why do I expect others to understand me without explaining myself?

When we are close to someone, it feels natural to think, "If they really cared, they would know." But no one can read minds, not even those who love us. Unspoken expectations are a quiet source of disappointment, because the other person does not even know the test they are being given.

😶 Why does being ignored sometimes hurt so much?

Being ignored can feel like being invisible, as if we do not matter. For human beings, being seen and acknowledged is a deep need. So an unanswered message or a distracted look can sting far more than the situation seems to deserve. The hurt is real, even if the reason behind the silence is simple, such as busyness or tiredness.

🎭 What happens within ME when someone doesn't behave as I expect?

Pause here, because this is the heart of the matter. When a person acts differently from what we hoped, something moves inside: disappointment, irritation, fear, a story about what it means. That inner movement, more than the behaviour itself, decides how we respond.

What happens with ME, and within ME 🔍

In any interaction, two things are going on. First, something happens with ME: the other person says or does something. Second, something happens within ME: we interpret it and feel it. Most of the time we respond to our interpretation, not to the event itself.

Something happens→ I interpret it→ I feel something→ I react

The same event can lead to very different reactions in different people, because the middle steps are personal. That is good news. It means there is a space between what happens and how we respond, and that space is where understanding grows.

We cannot control how others behave, but we can begin to understand how we respond.

A gentle way to respond differently 🌱

You do not need to become a perfect communicator. Next time a conversation heats up, try this:

  1. Pause. Take a breath before replying. Even three seconds help.
  2. Notice. What am I feeling right now? Hurt, anger, fear of being dismissed?
  3. Wonder. What did I expect here, and did I tell them?
  4. Listen. Let them finish. Then ask, "Did I understand you correctly?"
  5. Share. Say what you feel and need in simple words, without blaming.

Understanding yourself does not mean you are always the one at fault, and it does not mean other people never need to change. It simply means you meet them with more awareness and less automatic reaction. 💛
